Financial Abuse

An abuser may control you by controlling your finances.

  • Financial abuse can continue after the relationship is over by refusing to pay maintenance, taking you through family court unnecessarily
  • Many victims cannot afford to leave their abuser and finances are sometimes one of the reasons they stay.

Signs of financial abuse

You may be experiencing financial abuse if someone:

  • Witholds your money or controls your finances.
  • Steals money from you.
  • Gambles money (shared or your own) that’s needed for essentials.
  • Uses money (shared or your own) for alcohol or drugs.
  • Controls what you spend your money on.
  • Stops paying agreed-upon bills.
  • Stops you from earning your own money, not allowing you to go to work.
  • Gets in the way of your future progression; stopping you from studying, taking courses etc.
  • Steals your identity.

We can support you through our helpline if you believe that you or a loved one are experiencing financial abuse, so please give us a call if you need guidance.
